You are employed as an Operations Manager in a medium-sized manufacturing company
with a workforce of 300 employees. The company has been in operation for the past
seven years but the manufacturing department is still facing some major problems.
The major problems identified were as follow:
1. Product defects, product recalls and wastage.
2. Frequent machine breakdowns
3. Poor inventory management and control
As the new Operations Manager, you are required to put forward a proposal to the
Managing Director on how to overcome these major problems and to improve the overall
productivity of the manufacturing department. You are required to address the following
issues in the proposal to Managing Director:
1. How to improve the quality of the products manufactured by the company, reduce
wastage and prevent frequent machine breakdowns? (60 marks)
2. How to implement an effective and efficient inventory management system
through the effective use of forecasting methods? (40 marks)
