Chapter 2: Literature Review

Supply chain management is probably the most overlooked aspect of a company’s operations. Experts and previous researches all point to a system that can reduce overheads and increase an organisation’s profits in the long run. This system is generally known as supply chain management. However, not many companies in Peninsular Malaysia can be said to apply such a system into their daily operations. This research aims to study the definition and components of supply chain management and the risks involved in implementing or not implementing such a system. Before doing so, however, a pertinent review of all studies done on the same topic should give an overall view of what other researchers say on the matter.

For starters, in order to understand supply chain management, it is highly imperative that we know how it

actually adds to any one organisation’s bottom line. As such, “a supply chain is comprised of all the

businesses and individual contributors involved in creating a product, from raw materials to finished

merchandise” (Farhan, 2011). So you are looking at all components in a company’s cycle in manufacturing,
